Buju\'s lawyer responds to US government\'s cross-appeal
Posted On :  12th March 2012
Buju Banton's lawyer, David Markus has responded to the United States' government's request to have the courts ignore his appeal to have the artiste's guilty verdict overturned. Last month, Markus had filed an appeal, stating that the state had failed to bring enough evidence to convict Buju Banton, given name Mark Myrie. The state, through Assistant US Attorney James Preston, had been quick to respond, saying there was more than enough evidence to have convicted Myrie and that the courts should rethink throwing out a gun charge the prosecution had tacked on to the charges during a second trial. But Markus has responded to the prosecution's cross-appeal, saying the document did not refute their failure to prove Myrie's guilt. Markus has also restated his claim that Buju was entrapped by a government agent and that the artiste's right to a speedy trial was violated and that the acquittal on the gun charge issue was the correct one.

Kartel pens letter from behind bars
Posted On :  6th March 2012
Prominent Deejay Adidjah "Vybz Kartel" has written a letter from behind bars. The prominent deejay, who faces murder, drug and obstruction of justice charges stemming from three separate cases, issued a letter from the Horizon Remand Centre in Spanish Town, where he currently resides while awaiting trial. A part of his letter was published in the Sunday Gleaner by University of the West Indies Literary and Cultural professor, Carolyn Cooper who wrote an editorial piece on Kartel's current situation behind bars. In the letter, Kartel accuses law enforcement officials and the media of labeling him guilty before getting the chance to prove his innocence before the courts. "As you know I am in jail on numerous charges and I'd like to tell you that I am an innocent man who needs your help because I'm being painted as this evil 'D.J. by day, don by night' murderer who is society's number one cause of crime and violence. The police is using the media to slaughter me and as such I don't think I will get a fair trial. They are using the media to form public opinion of me that is so contradictory to the person that I really am. They (police) have tried my case in the public & found me guilty," the letter reads. "Every single piece of alleged evidence, every new development in the case is thrown on TV. As if this is a soap opera, but I can assure you that this is no movie to me. This is about my life and my freedom and I take them very seriously." "My charges are merely allegations, but they are giving the public the impression that I am guilty and that is not fair to me or my family," he said. "I have been to court on numerous occasions and saw hundreds of accused men who are charged with heinous crimes like murdering children, killing police officers, burning & shooting whole families and I have never once saw police on TV; discussing the development of those cases, much less every week, as in my case." Vybz Kartel remains in jail despite having copped bail on a marijuana possession charge. He still remains in police custody regarding murder and obstruction of justice related charges in relation to the murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams.

Luciano says the Port Hartcourt incident was a fluke
Posted On :  5th January 2012
Reggae artiste, Luciano, while confirming that there was a bottle-throwing incident at a show in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, is emphasizing that it was "out of the ordinary" and definitely does not reflect his normal reception in the motherland Africa. Luciano, known as the Messenjah, has been unwavering in his support of Africa and all things African. He has consistently done conscious lyrics and has a huge fan base in certain parts of Africa, a continent he has toured many times. "A lot of people may not know that I have a house in The Gambia and the people there accept me as one of their own. I have travelled to Ghana, where thousands come to meet me and attend by concerts. Up until now, my Africa experience has been among my greatest," Luciano declared. Reports out of Port Harcourt about the December 17 concert, stated that "Jamaican reggae icon, Luciano, was on Saturday night pelted with empty water bottles by some youths that attended the closing of the 2011 Rivers State Carnival popularly known as CARNIRIV at the Liberation Stadium." The original article labeled the youths behaviour as "hostile", while comments under the article denounced the incident and noted that certain disruptive elements of that society will behave like that, especially at free events. There were suggestions that the organizers should have known better than to put Luciano so far down on the programme, especially since there were many big name Afrcan acts on the line-up and Port Harcourt is somewhat behind in their appreciation of reggae acts like Luciano. Port Harcourt is also notorious for being unwelcoming to foreign acts. One person commented that, "Port-Harcourt is the worst place for foriegn artists to visit. It's the same Port Harcourt that someone jumped on stage and snatched Usher Raymond's bling from his neck. The last time Port-Harcourt receive a foreign artist with love was when Wyclef visited." As Luciano recalled, "A one man fling a one bottle and a one woman fling a phone to show their displeasure and we know how that kind of behaviour is catching. However, when I started to talk to them they calmed down a bit and I sang One Way Ticket and they became receptive." He pointed out that he felt that not enough thought was put into the running order by the organizers. Asked if this experience has given him a negative feelings towards Africa, Luciano was quick to respond, "Of course not." He added, "I believe that everything happens for a purpose and out of evil cometh good. Perhaps this will be a musical re-awakening for the people in Port Harcourt and will usher in an era of greater appreciation of foundation, roots reggae. I certainly don't take it personal, in addition, the wonderful experiences I have of performing in Africa will overshadow this every time." The carnival in Port Harcourt, Nigeria took place on December 17, 2011, after which Luciano returned to Jamaica and gave an awesome performance on Thursday, December 22, at the Tarrus Riley and Friends free concert at Emancipation Park in New Related articles

The opposition People's National Party, led by former premier Portia Simpson Miller, won the Jamaica's general elections, preliminary results showed late Thursday. The party had already won more than half the 63 seats up for grabs in Thursday's elections. Karl Samuda, the campaign director of the governing Jamaica Labour Party, conceded defeat on national television. Prime Minister Andrew Holness called the snap election after taking office when Bruce Golding resigned in October. Final results are expected Saturday. About 1.6 million citizens were eligible to vote. A key election issue was the Caribbean island's high national debt of about 130 per cent of its gross domestic product. High unemployment and crime were also key issues in the campaign.

"Even though I put this behind me, all I that I think came from the mere fact that I'm so talented and I was a threat to him and whoever was running the business at the time," he said. Bob Marley heirs sue half brother over name use
Posted On :  3rd December 2011
MIAMI (AP) -- A feud has erupted within the first family of reggae, with the widow and nine children of Bob Marley suing his half brother to stop use of the Marley name to promote an annual Miami music festival and profit from other businesses in his native Jamaica. The lawsuit filed Thursday in federal court contends the half brother, businessman Richard Booker, and several affiliated companies are violating copyright and trademark laws by using Marley's name, photographs, lyrics, symbols and other intellectual property without authorization. The lawsuit says people could be deceived into thinking those uses are officially endorsed by Marley's widow, Rita Marley, and their children. Booker and Bob Marley shared the same mother. The entities include the Bob Marley Movement of Jah People Inc., which promotes the music festival, a restaurant in Jamaica called Mama Marley's and several businesses with the name Nine Mile -- the part of Jamaica where Marley grew up and is now buried. One Nine Mile business offers a tour of the area, and the music event is known as the Nine Mile Music Festival. In addition, a recent press release about the music festival included this headline: "All For The Love Of Bob Marley." The 19th annual festival is scheduled for March of next year on Virginia Key, near Miami. Three of Marley's kids -- Stephen, Damien and Julian Marley -- are scheduled to perform. Marley, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, died of cancer in 1981 at age 36. Some of his best-known songs are "I Shot The Sheriff," ''Jamming," ''No Woman, No Cry," ''Get Up, Stand Up" and "Exodus." The lawsuit, filed by Fort Lauderdale attorney Bruce Hemerlee, seeks unspecified damages and also asks a judge to stop Booker and the companies from using any Marley-related references in the various ventures. Hemerlee represents Rita Marley and the children through a Bahamas-based entity called Fifty-Six Hope Road Music Ltd. Booker, whose home and businesses are in Miami, did not immediately return a telephone call Friday seeking comment. A spokeswoman at his business said a statement may be issued later. According to the festival's website, the event's roots date to a Bob Marley fan club begun in 1981. That gradually grew into the music festival and related food drive that has collected more than 2 million canned goods for shelters in Miami and Jamaica. The lawsuit says that Rita Marley and her children have long opposed Booker's attempts to trademark Marley-related business names and that at one point they reached a licensing deal, but Booker reneged on the deal.

Nicki Minaj Teases ‘Roman in Moscow’ Video
Posted On :  3rd December 2011
Nicki Minaj doesn’t plan on holding back on her sophomore album. Fresh off the release of her buzz single “Roman in Moscow,” the Young Money rapper shared why the rough-and-rugged cut is the “wackest thing” on the LP and spilled details about the video. “‘Roman in Moscow’ is like a teaser to Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which will drop on Valentine’s Day,” she told MTV News. “When I say it’s a teaser, it’s like a trailer to the movie, it’s like setting the stage and I just wanted to touch the surface. It’s the wackest thing on Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.” Revealing that a video for the fiery cut will be shot “real soon,” Nicki, who is nominated four times at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, wouldn’t disclose what exactly went down in Russia, but did say that the visuals starring her alter ego Roman Zolanski will explain all. “Well, he was there [in Moscow] secretly because [alter ego] Martha wanted him to go there, so they put him in this thing with monks and nuns; they were trying to rehabilitate him,” she explained. “But I can’t tell exactly what happened, you’ll just see it in the video format, but let’s just say he got out of there.” rap-up.com

Kartel gets $3M bail on one murder charge
Posted On :  1st December 2011
Dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel was granted $3 million bail in the Supreme Court today. The bail was in relation to his alleged murder earlier this year of Barrington 'Bossie' Bryan. The bail application was made by defence attorney Tom Tavares-Finson, who appeared in chambers with Michael Deans and Chris Tavares-Finson. The attorney took the matter to the High Court after Kartel was refused bail in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court last month. This, however, does not mean that Kartel will be released from jail, as he is currently facing another murder charge. The entertainer, along with three other men -- fellow deejay Shawn 'Shawn Storm' Campbell; fashion designer Calvin Haye; and Cayro Jones -- are charged with the August 16 murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams. The men are to appear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court tomorrow, where bail applications are expected to be made.

Vybz Kartel\'s Lawyer Clears Up Prison Escape Rumor
Posted On :  1st December 2011
Earlier this morning, a rumor broke of a violent prison break carried out by Vybz Kartel and other inmates in a Jamaican facility. The whole thing turned out to be completely made up, but it still had everybody talking. Boomshots had a chance to clear things up in an exclusive interview with Christian Tavares-Finson, the Jamaican dancehall star's lawyer. Christian spoke on the rumor and gave an update on Vybz' general outlook while being held on multiple murder charges. You can read the full interview here . Check out a few highlights below. Clarifying the rumor: "We were in court with [Vybz Kartel] this morning,so as far as his location and his status he’s still in the custody of the police. He did attend court this morning. He was brought to court by the police. As far as if people are concerned with whether or not it’s true, or any doubt, I think we can put that to rest. His defense team was in court this morning, and he was also present." On Kartel's state of mind: "As always, he’s in good spirits. He has full confidence in his defense team, which he chose himself. As far as we’re concerned, we will make significant progress as time passes. We’re confident that, based on what we have seen, it is going to be very difficult for the prosecution to continue bringing cases against him." On the possible motives behind the rumor: "Eventually it will be a jury trial. When one considers the population of Jamaica, you have to realize that it is a small jury pool. Any thought of rumor or any story being carried that is not true will prejudice the jury pool. We have to be very careful. At the end of the day, we want him to have a fair trial. It’s not about prejudice one way or the other, but about a fail trial. That is what we are seeking as the defense." On Kartel's reaction to the rumors: "He laughed [Laughs.]! The sense of humor is still in tact."

Ackee and salt fish- No 2 in world
Posted On :  1st December 2011
Ackee and salt fish number two So amid all this campaign activity, I came across an article in National Geographic which rated Jamaica 's national dish, ackee and salt fish, as No. 2 in a list of the top 10 national dishes from around the world. This may seem like a matter of little consequence to the average person, but I was really thrilled to see another positive story about our country in the international media, since we are so often pilloried and beaten down by others. I was a little indifferent to the fact that hamburger was rated number one, nonetheless, I felt good that there is strong acceptability of our culinary delights by others outside Jamaica . It matters not that salt fish (cod) is not a native of the island. Our motto, 'Out of Many, One People', speaks to the diversity of our people and Jamaica 's cuisine has always been open to foreign influences. Think curried goat, mackerel and bananas. We have found a way to combine salt fish with the exotic yellow fruit and made it into something distinct and delectable. For me, nothing beats a meal of ackee and salt fish. It's such a versatile dish that it can be served with roast breadfruit, boiled yam and bananas, fried dumplings, festival, and bammy. Although commonly served at breakfast, it can be had for lunch and dinner and I have seen some creative people use it for cocktails as a dip with breadfruit slices. Are you hungry yet? Jamaicans are always in concert with their tastes and this rating by as prestigious a publication as National Geographic puts our little country way up on the world's cuisine map. O, how the Jamaica Tourist Board and the Ministry of Tourism are missing out on opportunities to play up such positive endorsements. I submit that no visitor to the island should escape a taste of ackee and salt fish because, as they say, 'If you have it, flaunt it.' Marilyn

Chino to release love songs
Posted On :  11th November 2011
#BigShip artiste, Chino, will be releasing a slew of new singles in a few weeks, some of which will be ballads. He says there has not been a permanent shift in his lyrics or style, instead, "I like exploring new genres, beats and topics and some of the songs that will be released shortly will be more singing than singjaying. There's even a combination with myself and Di Genius singing called So Do I for the ladies - that will be hitting the airwaves in a few days." "...There's also the single, Desert Rose, which is out now with myself and an artiste out of Cayman by the name of Jeffery Wilson and the video will be released in a few days, so everyone can definitely look out for those and other singles coming in a few weeks," he says. Chino is no stranger to style exploration. In May of this year, Chino showcased his expansive knowledge of music when he released his debut US album, Chino, to rave reviews. The first two releases from the album, I Am (an upbeat club track with a French twist) and Seal Di Link (a slow provocative reggae ballad) were complete departures from Chino's prior style. Seal Di Link went on to top charts in the US and sold in excess of 150, 000 on iTunes during the first week of its release. Likewise, one of his most recent love ballads, Driving Me Insane featuring singer #Denyque, which was also featured on the album, has been a hit among fans. "Music is definitely one of the loves of my life, and as a result of that, I'm always going to be focused on it and exploring new areas and genres in an effort to please the fans," he says. Chino is also popularly known for his hits From Mawnin, Ruff It Up, Protected, Pon Yuh Head, Yeah Yeah (on the Peppa Riddim) and others.

Kartel says his legal team remains the same
Posted On :  9th November 2011
Kartel says his legal team remains the same One of the attorneys for popular Jamaican artiste Vybz Kartel, yesterday released a letter over the entertainer's signature dismissing media reports that they have been sacked. "I have not authorised any change in my legal team in whom I have the fullest confidence," read a section of the three-paragraph letter signed by the artiste, whose given name is Adidja Palmer. The letter blindsided attorney-at-law Hannah Harris-Barrington, who yesterday repeated claims she made in a radio interview on Monday that she has been retained to represent the entertainer. Harris-Barrington, who is also the attorney for another jailed dancehall star Ninja Man - given name Desmond Ballentyne - told The Gleaner she has two letters, given to her by Palmer during separate jailhouse visits last week, to support her claim. "I really don't know what is happening," she said. Despite this, Harris-Barrington said she was willing to step away from the case. "If that (Palmer's letter) has today's (yesterday's) date then that must mean he has given them back the case and that's fine," she said. Palmer, in the letter released through his attorney Christian Tavares-Finson, said: "I have not retained or engaged the services of Hannah Harris-Barrington to represent me in any matter and she is not authorised to speak on my behalf or to discuss my case." His letter added "This serves to confirm that I have retained the services of attorneys-at-law Tom Tavares-Finson, Michael Deans and Chris Tavares-Finson to represent me in all the matters for which I am currently before the court." Palmer is facing two murder charges arising from the deaths of businessman/promoter Barrington Burton and Clive Williams in separate incidents in July and August this year. Burton was shot dead while standing with friends in Gregory Park, St Catherine, while Williams was beaten and stabbed to death in Havendale, St Andrew. He has been in custody since October 1 when he and three other persons were arrested at a New Kingston hotel for possession of ganja.

Kim Kardashian is getting divorced

The 31-year-old reality TV star married basketball star Kris Humphries in a lavish televised ceremony in August but after rampant speculation their relationship was trouble, 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' producer Ryan Seacrest has confirmed a divorce is imminent. He wrote on twitter: "Yes @kimkardashian is filing for divorce this morning. I touched base with her, getting a statement in just a few mins (sic)." Kim, who attended a Halloween party in New York over the weekend but did not bring Kris along - has reportedly hired divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, who has previously represented Britney Spears, Maria Shriver, Angelina Jolie and Ryan Reynolds and will cite "irreconcilable differences" in her divorce papers. Sources close to the pair told website TMZ that their arguments over where to live were responsible for the breakdown of the union, with Kris wanting to live in Minnesota while Kim didn't want to leave Los Angeles. Although this has been a source of tension for some time, they decided to try to figure it out after the wedding because they were so caught up with being in love. Kim has previously revealed her marriage to 26-year-old Kris wasn't ideal because of the publicity surrounding their union and said they were finding it hard to get some alone time. She said: "It's not been ideal because you're newlyweds and you want privacy." Kim and Kris tied the knot in a fairytale ceremony in front of 440 guests in Montecito, California, with her sisters Khloe and Kourtney as matron and maid of honour, and her nephew, 23-month-old Mason, as ring bearer.
